Ingredients
2 tbsp rice bran oil
1 onion, grated
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 carrots, shredded
1 small zucchini, shredded
1½ cups rolled oats
¼ cup cheddar cheese, shredded
1 egg, beaten
1 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp SIDS HOT WORCESTER SAUCE
1½ cups flour
Directions
Cook onion and garlic in the oil for 5 minutes until tender. Add carrot and zucchini and cook further 2 minutes. Remove pan from heat and mix in oats, cheese and egg. Stir in soy sauce and SIDS HOT WORCESTER SAUCE then transfer to a bowl and refrigerate for 1 hour. Preheat the grill to high.
Put the flour on a large plate. Form the mixture into eight 8 cm round patties, dropping each into the flour, lightly coating both sides.
Oil the grill then cook patties for 5 minutes each side until heated through and golden brown.
History: The earliest known report in a newspaper is from July 5, 1896, when the Chicago Daily Tribune made a highly specific claim regarding a "hamburger sandwich" in an article about a "Sandwich Car": "A distinguished favourite, only five cents, is Hamburger steak sandwich, the meat for which is kept ready in small patties and 'cooked while you wait' on the gasoline range." An article from ABC News sums up: "One problem is that there is little written history. Another issue is that the spread of the burger happened largely at the World's Fair, from tiny vendors that came and went in an instant. And it is entirely possible that more than one person came up with the idea at the same time in different parts of the country."
